Construction of the Thilamalé Bridge has reached a key stage with the final segment connecting Villimalé and Gulhifalhu now in place.

The project forms part of a larger infrastructure plan to improve connectivity between islands in the greater Malé area. Officials described the joining of the last span as a major engineering milestone after months of marine works and pile driving.

The bridge is expected to reduce reliance on ferry services for residents and workers travelling between the islands. Once fully completed, it will also support the movement of materials and services for ongoing development projects in the region.

Progress has been monitored closely because of the technical challenges of building in a lagoon environment with strong currents. Contractors have used specialised barges and temporary supports throughout the operation.

Local communities have welcomed the advancement, noting that shorter travel times will ease daily commuting. Full opening is still some time away as finishing works, safety systems, and approach roads remain to be completed.

The government has highlighted the bridge as evidence of continued investment in transport infrastructure. Further updates on the remaining timeline are expected from the project authorities in the coming weeks.
