The Thilamalé Bridge has physically connected Villimalé and Gulhifalhu following the installation of the final segment between the two islands.

Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib announced the milestone on social media, confirming that the approximately 750-metre section is now complete. He congratulated Indian contractor Afcons Infrastructure, Arup and the ministry team, and thanked the Government of India for its support.

More than 80 percent of the overall project has been completed. The government is targeting completion of the entire development by the end of 2027.

The latest milestone follows the connection of the 2.2-kilometre bridge between Malé and Villimalé in August. Construction teams are now focused on installing remaining deck segments. Of the 1,222 precast concrete segments required, a large proportion has already been manufactured at the casting facility in Gulhifalhu.

The 6.7-kilometre Greater Malé Connectivity Project will link Malé, Villimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi through three over-water bridges and connecting highways. The project is valued at approximately USD 500 million, financed through a USD 100 million Indian grant and a USD 400 million line of credit from India’s Exim Bank.

Once operational, the link is expected to improve movement, reduce logistics costs and support economic activity across the Greater Malé region.
