The Maldivian Democratic Party has passed a resolution to stage mass protests if the government does not hold a public referendum on the Rasmale project.
The opposition has demanded a halt to the project, citing concerns over the terms of the commercial agreement with Eagle Hills and the lack of public consultation. Some members have described the arrangement as effectively transferring control of reclaimed land without adequate safeguards for Maldivian interests.
Former MDP chair Fayyaz Ismail has warned that an MDP government would revoke any agreement that proceeds without public consent. Other party figures have called for full disclosure of the deal details.
The resolution comes ahead of a planned protest by the "Maldivian Land for Maldivians" movement on November 6. Male City Council has also formally backed calls for greater public involvement.
The government maintains that the project will create thousands of jobs and deliver long-term economic benefits without adding to public debt.
