A meeting of the Adhaalath Party’s consultative council, set to discuss the controversial sale of Rasmale’ land to Mohamed Alabbar’s Eagle Hills, was cancelled last night because not enough members were present to form a quorum.
Party President Mohamed Shifan did not respond to requests for comment on the cancellation. The meeting had been expected to address the project, which involves 500 hectares of reclaimed land at Fushidhiggaru lagoon.
The government maintains that the land is being leased for 99 years. However, Eagle Hills has indicated that if properties are sold before the initial term expires, a new 99-year lease would begin. Commercial terms were signed on 21 September, and the permanent agreement is targeted for signing around Republic Day in mid-November.
The deal has drawn criticism from opposition parties and religious groups. President Mohamed Muizzu has previously pledged that not a single grain of sand from the reclaimed area would be given to foreign parties, a position that critics say has been reversed.
Adhaalath Party has been among those raising questions about the project’s implications for the country’s Islamic identity and sovereignty. The cancelled meeting leaves the party’s formal position still to be clarified.
