One in five Maldivians experiences symptoms of depression, according to the Health Ministry, citing the 2020–21 STEP Survey, as the country marks World Mental Health Day.
Authorities say stigma and discrimination stop many people seeking help. Psychiatric services are being expanded in the atolls and regional hospitals, and a 50-bed psychiatric and mental health hospital is being built in Hulhumalé to international standards, offering long-term treatment and rehabilitation in one place.
The main events were held on 9 and 10 October on Kaashidhoo, in Kaafu Atoll, including a community colour run and a Resilient Family Fair run with the National Mental Health Department, IGMH and the Health Protection Agency. A tea-and-talk dialogue for senior citizens aims to support their emotional wellbeing, and events are planned across the atolls.
The World Health Organization's 2026 theme is 'Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.' Globally, about one in seven people, roughly 1.2 billion, had a mental health disorder as of 2023, it says.
