Health, Family and Welfare Minister Geela Ali has outlined ongoing efforts to expand employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, including skills assessments, targeted recruitment and workplace training.

Speaking at the Ahaa Forum, the minister said the measures implement a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his election campaign. The government is assessing individual skills to match people with suitable roles in private companies and the civil service.

More than 400 people with disabilities have been placed in employment, the highest figure recorded in the past decade. However, over 1,000 people are still seeking work. The government aims to secure jobs for 500 people a year but has placed only 60 so far in 2026.

Discussions have been held with the Civil Service Commission to create positions based on office needs. State-owned companies including STELCO, HDC and Maldives Ports Limited are also participating. Disability allowances continue for those who find employment.

The government is simultaneously reviewing legislation on the rights of persons with disabilities with a view to introducing amendments. These steps follow direct concerns raised by disabled people and their families during campaign meetings with the president.

Officials say the combination of assessment, placement and retained benefits is intended to support active participation in the workforce.
