Five people were injured on Sunday after a gas cylinder exploded at a café in Hulhumalé Phase 1, according to police.
The incident occurred near the Ruhgandu 1 area. Authorities said four of the victims were transported to Hulhumalé Hospital for treatment, while the fifth sustained injuries of a less severe nature. Emergency teams responded to the resulting fire, which was brought under control at the scene.
Police stated that the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation. No further details on the identities or conditions of the injured individuals have been released at this stage. Officials confirmed that the café is located in a residential and commercial zone of Phase 1.
Gas-related incidents have occurred periodically in the Maldives, often linked to storage or handling practices in densely populated areas. Previous cases in Male' and other islands have prompted calls for stricter safety checks on cylinders used in commercial kitchens and households.
Local residents reported hearing a loud blast followed by smoke. Fire and rescue units, along with police, secured the area to prevent further risk. Authorities have urged nearby businesses to review their gas safety protocols while the probe continues.
The Maldives National Defence Force also assisted in the response. Updates on the victims' recovery and the investigation findings are expected in the coming days.
