First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for nationwide commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of senior citizens, describing older generations as the strongest moral and cultural pillars of Maldivian society.

Speaking at a community gathering focused on active ageing and public health awareness, the First Lady underscored the responsibility of families, communities, and public institutions to ensure elderly Maldivians enjoy accessible, dignified healthcare and social inclusion.

Honoring generational contributions

In remarks reported by the President's Office, the First Lady paid tribute to the perseverance of elder citizens who guided the country through historical economic hardship and foundational state-building eras:

"Senior citizens shouldered the heaviest burdens of national development and nurtured our communities through demanding times. Ensuring that they live healthy, peaceful, and fulfilled lives is an essential obligation for every citizen," First Lady Sajidha said.

She noted that rapid modernization and urban shift must not erode traditional values of filial respect and collective familial care, urging younger generations to remain actively engaged in the daily lives of their elders.

Policy focus on geriatric healthcare

The First Lady highlighted ongoing government initiatives aimed at expanding specialized healthcare services tailored to age-related illnesses, non-communicable diseases, and mobility limitations. She pointed to efforts by the Ministry of Health and regional health centres to decentralize screening programs and chronic disease management.

Authorities are also working to develop specialized community activity spaces and community outreach networks across regional islands, ensuring elderly citizens remain mentally engaged and socially connected. The First Lady reaffirmed that government policy prioritizes comprehensive social safety nets that protect older persons from neglect and economic vulnerability.
