Collections managed by the Maldives Zakat Fund surpassed MVR 109 million during the first nine months of 2026, marking steady revenue expansion and outpacing the total annual receipts collected across the entire preceding year.
Official statistical returns released by the Maldives Zakat House under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, and reported by Raajje.mv, show that cumulative collections of Zakat al-Mal (Zakat on Wealth) between 1 January and 30 September reached MVR 109,262,025.69. The performance represents an increase of MVR 2.8 million over the MVR 106.45 million registered throughout the entirety of 2025, reflecting year-on-year revenue growth of approximately 2.64 percent.
Islamic affairs officials attributed the upward trajectory to elevated public awareness, enhanced corporate compliance among domestic enterprises, and the rollout of simplified digital payment interfaces that facilitate direct wealth evaluations and automated banking contributions.
Under Islamic Sharia, Zakat receipts are strictly segregated and disbursed to eligible beneficiary categories, serving as a primary state social safety net. In the Maldives, the funds provide essential financial relief to registered low-income households, underprivileged families facing severe economic distress, and citizens requiring life-saving overseas medical treatments not fully covered by the national health insurance scheme.
The Ministry highlighted that the fund has also sustained dedicated social assistance programs, including underwriting substantial medical subsidies for expensive bone marrow transplants, specialized surgeries, and long-term care support for patients suffering from chronic terminal illnesses.
The establishment of the specialized Maldives Zakat House earlier this year has formalized fiduciary oversight and transparent accounting standards for the fund. The agency publishes monthly balance sheets and expenditure disclosures to bolster public trust.
