The Maldivian government has strongly condemned what it described as Houthi attacks on Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia on 6 and 7 October.

In a statement on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said the attacks resulted in loss of life, injuries and damage to airport facilities. It called them a blatant violation of Saudi Arabia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and a serious threat to regional peace, security and stability.

The government extended its condolences to the families of those who died and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. It reiterated its solidarity with the government and people of Saudi Arabia and said it supports all measures to safeguard the Kingdom's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

What is known about the attacks

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation said three civilians were injured and 36 people were affected overall. AtollPost has not independently verified those figures.

Oman's Foreign Ministry also condemned the targeting of Abha and King Khalid international airports on Thursday, saying the attacks caused deaths, injuries and material damage. Oman rejected attacks on civilian facilities and urged restraint to avoid wider escalation in the region. Its statement did not name those responsible.

The Maldivian statement attributes the attacks to the Houthi group. The casualty descriptions in the government statements and the civil aviation authority's figures differ and have not been reconciled.
