Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has said Egypt is prepared to take any necessary measures to support Saudi Arabia’s security amid intensifying attacks by Yemen’s Houthi forces.
Speaking during a military academy graduation ceremony, Sisi stated that Egypt would not stand idle if Saudi Arabia’s safety or stability was threatened. He emphasised that Egypt is not a country that seeks to attack others but remains ready to act in defence of its partners.
An emergency session of the Egyptian parliament has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon to consider the matter. Sisi indicated that parliamentary approval would be required for any such assistance and that he had requested the urgent meeting in response to a Saudi request.
Houthi forces, backed by Iran, have launched multiple missile and drone attacks on Saudi targets in recent days, including the international airport in Riyadh and facilities linked to Saudi Aramco. The strikes follow the breakdown of a truce and renewed fighting between Houthi forces and the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
Egypt and Saudi Arabia maintain close strategic and economic ties. Saudi Arabia previously led a military coalition that included Egypt against the Houthis after 2015. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited Cairo in September to discuss Red Sea security.
Sisi said any action would follow guidance from King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The parliament session was called at short notice, though the formal agenda has not been made public.
