Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has begun military training alongside members of his cabinet and other senior officials.

The training is taking place at the Hurso Military Training Centre. Photos shared on social media by the prime minister show him participating with ministers, state ministers and heads of government institutions.

Abiy said the discipline and order within the armed forces can help build strong leaders and support the country’s development. He has previously described military preparedness and national development as key goals of his government.

The move is unusual in Ethiopia. The country currently faces security challenges, including unrest in parts of the northern Tigray region, difficulties in the Amhara region and concerns about stability in Oromia.

Tensions with neighbouring Eritrea have also raised fears of possible renewed conflict. The government has not announced how long the training will last or exactly when it started.

The training comes as Ethiopia continues to manage internal security issues while seeking economic progress.
