Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his full support for the Rasmale development project.

In separate remarks, Nasheed expressed concern that the Maldivian Democratic Party is drifting away from its founding principles. He has previously cautioned against xenophobic and ultra-nationalistic rhetoric within the opposition.

Nasheed's position on Rasmale contrasts with some MDP figures who have called for a public referendum and threatened to revoke any agreement if the project proceeds without public consultation. The project involves a major real estate development by Eagle Hills at the reclaimed site.

The former president has also launched a short story collection, highlighting his continued public engagement.

His comments come as the MDP passed a resolution to stage mass protests if a referendum is not held on the Rasmale deal.
