President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the outcome of the Local Government Authority (LGA) board election reflects public support for the services provided by the government.

He made the comment in a post congratulating the two PNC candidates who won. He thanked island councillors and WDC presidents who voted for the PNC candidates, saying they had recognised efforts to strengthen the decentralisation system and bring services and opportunities closer to people.

The successful candidates are Ali Ahmed, president of the F. Nilandhoo Council, and Mariyam Zeena, president of the Sh. Funadhoo Women’s Development Committee. Of the 807 eligible voters, 706 cast ballots, a turnout of 87.5 per cent.

Under the Decentralisation Act, the LGA board has three elected members: one chosen by city councillors, one by island councillors, and one by WDC presidents.

The president also thanked the party leadership, Majlis members, constituency presidents and steering committees for their work in the election.

The result is being presented by the government as an indication of support for its approach to local governance.
