The Maldives Police Service has seized a motorcycle and levied substantial statutory financial penalties against a young rider caught performing dangerous stunts and driving recklessly along public roads in Malé.

The enforcement action follows intensified surveillance by traffic officers targeting dangerous driving practices that endanger motorists and pedestrians across the capital.

Detection and enforcement action

According to police authorities, the individual was identified performing hazardous vehicle maneuvers, including high-speed swerving and wheelies, along busy urban streets. Officers intercepted the vehicle following public tip-offs and traffic surveillance monitoring.

Upon apprehending the motorist, traffic department personnel impounded the motorcycle and issued statutory fines under regulations governing dangerous and negligent operation of motor vehicles on public roads:

"Stunt driving and reckless speeding on populated public roadways directly jeopardize human life. We will consistently enforce maximum statutory penalties and seize vehicles involved in such violations," the Maldives Police Service stated.

Police confirmed that the rider's driving license privileges have been suspended pending administrative review.

Tougher stance on traffic violations

The enforcement comes amidst heightened public alarm over reckless motorcycle use in the Greater Malé region, which has led to multiple fatal collisions and critical injuries over recent weeks.

Authorities have intensified static road checks, digital speed camera monitoring, and mobile police patrols across Malé, Hulhumalé, and the Sinamalé Bridge highway. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and law enforcement agencies have warned that individuals engaging in organized road stunts or racing will face progressive vehicle confiscation, driving disqualification, and formal criminal prosecution under newly amended road safety laws.
