Marvin S.Y. Varnes, who was convicted of murdering his wife Mary Grace Oned Pineda in 2021, has submitted an appeal to the High Court of the Maldives seeking to overturn his conviction and life sentence.
The Criminal Court of the Maldives sentenced Varnes to life imprisonment in July after finding him guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Mary Grace, a Filipina dialysis nurse employed at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Malé.
Grounds of appeal
Legal representatives for Varnes have lodged an application with the appellate court contesting the evaluation of forensic evidence and procedural findings reached during the trial. According to court records, the defence argues that the prosecution failed to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt and that critical witness testimony had been misinterpreted.
Mary Grace was found dead in the couple's apartment in Malé in October 2021. While initial claims suggested she had died by suicide, an autopsy conducted by authorities determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma and asphyxiation, prompting a comprehensive homicide investigation.
"The defense maintains that the procedural rulings and evidentiary standards applied by the lower court warrant full appellate review," legal sources confirmed regarding the filing.
Co-accused and trial history
During the lower court proceedings, state prosecutors presented digital communications and medical expert findings alleging that Varnes had conspired with Haleemath Lamha, a Maldivian nurse with whom he was romantically involved. The Criminal Court convicted Lamha of complicity and sentenced her to 15 years in prison, while handing Varnes a life sentence.
The High Court is currently conducting initial administrative scrutiny of the appeal dossier before determining whether the application will be formally registered for a bench hearing. The case remains one of the most high-profile homicide prosecutions in the Maldives in recent years.
