First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has called on women across the nation to overcome hesitation and pursue routine medical screenings for breast cancer, emphasizing that timely diagnosis substantially expands therapeutic choices and offers the greatest probability of complete recovery.
Delivering an address to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, known globally as Pink October, and reported by the President's Office, the First Lady underscored the necessity of building an empathetic, patient-centered oncology care system in the Maldives. She insisted that patients navigating serious diagnoses deserve dignified, coordinated, and compassionate support alongside clinical interventions.
Addressing the unique geographical constraints of an archipelago spanning hundreds of dispersed islands, the First Lady stressed that physical distance must never become a barrier to life-saving medical care:
"Distance should not limit access to care or determine the quality or timeliness of treatment. Continued national efforts are vital to strengthen breast cancer services, streamline diagnostic referral pathways, and make specialized oncology care accessible across the atolls."
The First Lady highlighted ongoing investments in continuous professional development for medical practitioners, noting that expanding the clinical workforce is essential to fully utilize advanced diagnostic machinery, including digital mammography and biopsy technologies deployed in regional hospitals.
Paying tribute to cancer survivors, current patients, and families who have lost loved ones to the disease, she urged the community to foster an environment of active emotional support and destigmatize cancer discussions. She cautioned that fear of diagnosis often delays essential consultations until diseases reach advanced stages:
"Do not allow fear to delay seeking qualified medical advice or undergoing regular screening. Early detection must be understood as bringing hope—enabling earlier intervention, broader treatment options, and significantly brighter chances of long-term recovery."
Public health clinics under the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and regional tertiary hospitals have scheduled subsidized screening clinics and awareness sessions throughout the month of October. Health updates and clinic schedules can be found at hpa.gov.mv.
