The Elections Commission has requested that eligible voters check the voters' register and file complaints in advance of the by-elections for local councils and women's development committees scheduled for next month.
Elections Commission Director Shahula Ismail said the main purpose of the complaints process is to ensure that accurate and complete registers are sent to polling stations, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the elections.
He noted that issues with voters' lists are often identified only after people arrive at polling stations. Under the law, the commission cannot make changes to the register once the complaint period ends.
The lists are prepared based on data from the Department of National Registration. Shahula highlighted that arrangements for promptly updating the register in cases such as death are not yet fully in place.
He urged the public to carefully check their details before the deadline and asked political parties to help raise awareness among voters. Parties also have the opportunity to submit complaints separately.
Maintaining public and political party confidence in the electoral process requires accurate registers, Shahula said. The commission is working to ensure the by-elections proceed smoothly with reliable voter information.
