The Maldives is taking part in the 52nd session of the Universal Periodic Review, during which the human-rights records of 14 countries are being examined by the UN Human Rights Council.
The Universal Periodic Review is a peer-review process in which every UN member state is assessed every four to five years. Participating states receive recommendations from other governments on a range of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights issues.
Previous reviews of the Maldives have covered topics including gender equality, freedom of expression, migrant-worker protections and environmental rights linked to climate change. The government typically prepares a national report and responds to recommendations after the interactive dialogue.
The session is under way in Geneva. Outcomes and accepted recommendations will be published after the review concludes.
