India has said it will keep a close watch on the agreements signed during President Mohamed Muizzu’s recent state visit to Pakistan and will take appropriate steps if necessary.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks after the two countries concluded around 20 memorandums of understanding covering defence, maritime security, trade and other areas.
New Delhi has historically maintained close ties with Malé and has previously expressed sensitivity to the Maldives’ defence relationships with other countries. Officials said they will assess the practical implications of the new deals.
The Maldives government has described the engagements as part of a balanced foreign policy that seeks partnerships with multiple nations. Critics at home, including former president Mohamed Nasheed, have warned that deeper military cooperation with Pakistan could strain relations with India.
Both countries continue to emphasise the importance of regional stability and bilateral dialogue.
