Former President Abdulla Yameen has called on Islamic Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheem to resign over the Rasmale’ land deal.

Yameen said the minister should take responsibility for what he described as a failure to protect the Maldives’ Islamic character in the face of the proposed development. He argued that the deal raises serious questions about long-term residency and land ownership by non-Muslims.

The call comes as opposition parties and religious figures continue to press the government for greater transparency and a public referendum on the project. Yameen has been among the most vocal critics of the Eagle Hills agreement.

Minister Shaheem has not publicly responded to the specific call for his resignation. The government has maintained that the project is an economic initiative and that existing legal frameworks will govern any residency arrangements.

Yameen’s statement adds to the political pressure surrounding the Rasmale’ deal. He has previously accused the current administration of compromising national interests and has organised public events to mobilise opposition to the project.

The Islamic Ministry has a role in advising on matters related to religious law and social issues. Critics have questioned whether sufficient consultation has taken place with religious authorities before the deal was advanced.
