Maldives Customs has arrested two Nepalese nationals for attempting to smuggle over 1.1 kilograms of heroin, cocaine and morphine into the country.

The suspects, a man and a woman, had hidden the drugs in 142 ingested pellets. The seizure follows a recent increase in drug trafficking attempts detected by Maldivian authorities.

Under local drug laws, the pair could face the death penalty if convicted of trafficking quantities above the statutory thresholds.

Authorities have not released further details on the exact method of detection or the current status of the investigation. The case is expected to be referred to the police and prosecutor general for further action.
