Transparency Maldives has called on the authorities to cancel a decision to deport foreign workers who had sought to assert their labour rights.
The organisation said the workers had raised concerns about employment conditions and that deportation in such circumstances risks discouraging legitimate complaints and undermining labour protections. It urged the Ministry of Homeland Security and the Immigration Department to review the cases and ensure due process.
Foreign workers make up a significant share of the labour force in construction, tourism and services. Labour disputes and deportation decisions have periodically drawn scrutiny from civil-society groups and international observers.
No official response to the call had been published at the time of reporting.
