The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has signed three agreements with the Meedhoo Council in Addu City to strengthen the agricultural sector on the island.

State Minister Ahmed Hassan Didi signed the agreements on behalf of the ministry, while Meedhoo Council President Ahmed Shathir signed on behalf of the council.

The agreements cover the establishment of a coconut pest rehabilitation laboratory in Meedhoo, the donation of greenhouses to the council, and joint work to set up an agroforestry farm on the island.

Under the laboratory agreement, the ministry will provide the necessary equipment, technical assistance and training for the facility. The greenhouse donation includes equipment, technical support and training. For the agroforestry farm, the ministry has committed to providing the required assistance.

These steps form part of broader efforts to expand agroforestry farms across the Maldives. The ministry has previously signed similar agreements with 10 other islands.

Meedhoo has a significant farming community, and the initiatives aim to increase local production, support food security and improve sustainable farming practices. The agreements were formalised to advance agricultural development in the island's allocated farming areas.

Local farmers and council officials have welcomed the support, which is expected to help modernise operations and expand the range of crops grown on the island.
