A research study carried out in the previous year has found that mental health difficulties, including severe anxiety, are most common among students in grades 10 to 12.
The findings indicate that the final years of secondary schooling coincide with the highest reported rates of mental health challenges among the student population surveyed. Education and health authorities have been examining the results as part of wider efforts to strengthen school-based support services.
Separate reporting has also highlighted rising use of e-cigarettes among tertiary students, with one survey of Maldives National University students recording a 28 percent usage rate.
Officials have previously called for greater attention to student wellbeing, early intervention and reduced stigma around seeking help for mental health concerns.
