State Electric Company (Stelco) has been awarded the contract to repair and upgrade the existing drainage system on Addu Mahibadhoo.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. Minister Ali Shareef signed for the ministry and Stelco Deputy Managing Director Abdulla Nazir signed for the company.

The total contract value is MVR 21,572,640.09. Work is scheduled to be completed within 180 days from the date of signing.

Minister Shareef said the project involves upgrading the drainage system currently operating on the island, including pipes, pump stations and the street-level treatment plants. He noted that many islands still rely on ageing water and drainage infrastructure and that similar upgrade work is under way elsewhere.

Mahibadhoo is one of the more densely populated islands with an older system, and the ministry views the project as part of a wider programme to improve drainage across multiple islands.

The award continues the government’s focus on upgrading basic infrastructure in the atolls.
