Schools across the Maldives are increasingly relying on financial contributions from parents and teachers to meet day-to-day needs, according to statements from education stakeholders.

Mauroof Zakir, a member of parliament, has highlighted that schools are being forced to depend on these external sources because government allocations are insufficient for all requirements.

Parents and teachers have organised fundraising activities in several schools to support teaching materials, maintenance and other expenses. The situation has raised questions about the adequacy of public education funding.

The Ministry of Education has not issued a detailed response to the latest claims. Budget documents for 2027 show allocations for the education sector, but schools report that practical shortfalls remain.
