The National Movement opposing the Rasmale’ land deal has postponed its planned protest in Malé to 13 November to allow better coordination with the Maldivian Democratic Party.

Former Home Minister Imran Abdulla, a leading figure in the movement, said the delay would enable more effective preparation as public pressure grows for a national referendum on the project. The coalition has warned that any agreement signed against the public will could be annulled by a future government without compensation to the developer.

The commercial terms agreement with Eagle Hills for 500 hectares of the reclaimed lagoon was signed in Dubai on 21 September. Critics argue the arrangement raises questions about foreign control of reclaimed land and compliance with constitutional restrictions on land ownership. A petition calling for a parliamentary inquiry has also been submitted.

The government has defended the project as economically beneficial and consistent with the constitution. It has indicated that a definitive agreement is targeted for mid-November, coinciding with Republic Day.
