President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the era in which the Maldives could be treated as a puppet by any foreign power is over.
The remarks reflect the administration’s emphasis on strategic autonomy and balanced international relations. The President has previously stressed that the country’s size does not justify external pressure or interference in its decision-making.
The statement comes amid ongoing debates over defence partnerships, infrastructure projects, and economic agreements with multiple partners. Officials have highlighted efforts to diversify relationships while prioritising national interests.
The comments form part of broader messaging on sovereignty and self-reliance in foreign and security policy.
