President Mohamed Muizzu has described the production of food locally and the reduction of import dependence as matters of national independence.

In a message posted on his official account to mark Farmers’ Day, the president said the government is committed to supporting farmers with modern technology so they can increase yields. He emphasised that making it easier for locally grown produce of certain categories to reach markets, rather than relying on imports, is a priority.

The president noted that expanding domestic food production would help shield the country from global price fluctuations and supply-chain disruptions. He also highlighted the role of agriculture in retaining foreign currency and creating jobs in the islands.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed separately encouraged citizens to take up home gardening, saying small spaces can produce significant amounts of food with the help of technology, while improving green cover and air quality. She also called for adherence to health and safety standards in gardening.
