President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is expected to travel to Pakistan this week for an official visit, according to reports from Pakistani media and statements from Maldivian officials.

Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting in Islamabad to review arrangements for the trip. The Pakistani Foreign Office said the discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, health, education, climate change, tourism and civil aviation.

Reports indicate the visit is scheduled for 20 to 22 October. President Muizzu would lead a ministerial delegation and hold talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari. If confirmed, it would be the first state visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in over 11 years. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1966 and are marking six decades of ties.

Maldivian Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef told MV+ that discussions remain ongoing and the official schedule is being finalised. He noted that Pakistani press reports were not necessarily definitive, adding that the President's Office would issue a formal statement shortly.

The proposed agenda includes establishing direct air links and revitalising SAARC, alongside broader bilateral issues. A number of agreements and memorandums of understanding covering trade, investment, defence, maritime security and other areas are expected to be signed during the visit.

The trip comes as both sides seek to strengthen ties amid regional developments. The President's Office has not yet released the full programme.
