A police officer sustained serious injuries after a motorcycle travelling at more than 100 kilometres per hour struck him at a checkpoint on the highway linking Malé and Hulhumalé early on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:29 am on the lane heading towards Hulhumalé. Police said the rider lost control after approaching the checkpoint at high speed, crashed into barricades and hit the officer on duty.

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed said preliminary findings indicated the collision was intentional. He described it as an act aimed at obstructing a special operation targeting dangerous driving and at undermining the resolve of officers involved.

The injured officer suffered a split lip, broken teeth and other significant injuries. He was taken to ADK Hospital for treatment. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident, along with two motorcycles.

Police have stepped up enforcement against speeding, reckless overtaking and modified vehicles in the Greater Malé area following a rise in accidents. The operation continues under the new Land Transport Act.

Authorities said the motorcyclist involved had been travelling from Malé towards Hulhumalé when the crash occurred. Investigations are ongoing.
