Traffic police officers have arrested a 27-year-old male driver in connection with a high-velocity, multi-vehicle traffic collision in Hulhumalé Phase 2 that left several young motorists critically injured and hospitalized over the weekend.
The Maldives Police Service announced the arrest on Wednesday, stating that the suspect was taken into custody under a judicial warrant following preliminary crash reconstruction analysis, CCTV footage tracking, and eyewitness testimony.
High-speed collision and ongoing medical care
The accident occurred along an arterial boulevard in Hulhumalé Phase 2, an area that has experienced recurring serious collisions linked to excessive speeding, reckless driving maneuvers, and unauthorized late-night street racing.
According to medical officials at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, two victims involved in the collision continue to battle critical traumatic brain and internal injuries in the intensive care unit under around-the-clock mechanical ventilation:
"The 27-year-old motorist was apprehended under court order for operating a motor vehicle dangerously and recklessly, causing grievous bodily harm. He has been remanded in custody as traffic investigations proceed," police spokespersons stated.
Investigators confirmed that the suspect’s vehicle has been impounded, with officers conducting forensic examinations to verify vehicle mechanical condition and speed at the point of impact.
Intensified traffic law enforcement in suburbs
The arrest follows mounting public calls from residents of Hulhumalé demanding stringent traffic calming measures, permanent speed camera enforcement, and harsher penal sentences for dangerous motorists.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation announced that it will introduce digital automated one-way and speeding violation detection systems linked directly to mobile alerts, while the police traffic department has intensified mobile speed radar traps, nighttime checkpoints, and immediate impoundment protocols across Hulhumalé Phase 1 and Phase 2.
