The People’s Majlis has rejected a no-confidence motion against Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, with 54 members voting to retain him and 10 voting in favour of removal.

The motion was submitted in August by 13 members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party and introduced by Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir. It accused Saeed of failing to manage state assets, control the black-market dollar rate above MVR 21, remain accountable to Parliament, protect local businesses, and advance announced economic projects.

During the debate, Saeed defended his record, stating that approximately USD 1.94 billion had been released through official banking channels since the current administration took office. He noted that the Maldives Monetary Authority holds authority over exchange rate policy.

Several PNC members were absent from the sitting. Two members who attended did not vote. The outcome reflects the ruling party’s legislative majority. The motion fell well short of the 47 votes required for passage.
