The People's Majlis has rejected a no-confidence motion against Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed.

Fifty-four members voted against the motion while 10 supported it. The motion was submitted in August by 13 members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group.

The MDP cited alleged failures to manage state finances, control the parallel-market dollar rate, remain accountable to Parliament, protect local businesses, and concerns over Special Economic Zone amendments. Lawmakers also pointed to unofficial exchange rates above MVR 21 compared with the official rate of MVR 15.42.

Defending his record, Saeed said the administration had released approximately USD 1.94 billion through official channels since taking office. He presented figures showing USD 483.53 million in 2024, USD 733.82 million in 2025 and USD 718.53 million so far in 2026.

The minister rejected claims of economic mismanagement and said foreign currency availability through banking channels had improved. The outcome leaves Saeed in post, marking another unsuccessful opposition attempt to remove a cabinet member this term.
