Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has commended the Maldives’ tourism sector and expressed confidence that newly signed memoranda of understanding will elevate bilateral relations.
The remarks were made during a high-level meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad, where President Mohamed Muizzu met President Zardari. Discussions covered strengthening ties in trade, education, health and capacity building.
Zardari noted the Pakistani public’s appreciation for a Maldivian head of state visiting after a decade-long interval. The three-day state visit from 20 to 22 October took place at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Following bilateral talks, President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed attended a state banquet. First Lady Sajidha held separate discussions with Pakistan’s First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, focusing on preventive healthcare, non-communicable diseases and empowering women and girls.
The visit included the signing of multiple agreements and explored opportunities for direct flights and expanded cooperation. Officials from both sides described the engagement as a step toward deeper partnership.
Tourism remains a central pillar of the Maldivian economy, and Pakistani comments underscored interest in increased visitor flows and related business links.
