More than 20 expatriate workers have been detained by Immigration authorities after they resisted deportation following a strike over unpaid wages.
The workers had been employed at a resort construction site. Aima Construction confirmed that it dismissed the leaders of the strike. A company representative said the workers were dismissed because they had protested.
Twenty-one workers are now in Immigration detention. Foreign workers in the Maldives have limited rights to strike, and industrial action can lead to deportation under current immigration rules.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about labour conditions for migrant workers in the construction and tourism sectors. Authorities have not released further details on the specific wage claims or the status of the remaining workers.
