More than 20 expatriate workers have been detained after resisting attempts to deport them following a protest over unpaid wages.
The workers were employed at a resort development project in Kaafu Bolidhuffaru lagoon. An estimated 100 workers took part in a demonstration over unpaid salaries and welfare concerns. Police said 22 expatriates were taken to the airport for repatriation after their employer decided to terminate their contracts. One departed without incident, while the remaining 21 refused to leave and were handed over to Maldives Immigration.
Immigration confirmed the transfer and said action would be taken under established procedures for disobeying lawful orders. Transparency Maldives has expressed concern over the detentions, stating that workers should not be deported for exercising their rights and calling for an investigation into the underlying labour issues.
Police stated that the workers were brought to the airport after administrative processes for removal were completed. No further details on the specific wage arrears or conditions at the site have been released by authorities.
The case highlights ongoing challenges with migrant labour rights and enforcement of employment standards in the construction and tourism sectors.
