The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has formally opened nominations for candidates seeking election to its National Council, with polling scheduled to take place on 27 November 2026.

The party announced the timeline on Saturday following a decision by its leadership committee to renew the governing body's regional and administrative mandates ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

Nomination guidelines and voter eligibility

According to an official announcement issued by the MDP secretariat, party members interested in contesting constituency seats and specialized committee posts within the National Council must submit their formal candidacy documentation before the published deadline.

The party's electoral committee confirmed that voter registries will be based on verified party membership rolls finalized on 20 October 2026:

"The National Council election represents a crucial milestone in strengthening internal democracy, ensuring representative leadership from every atoll and constituency," the party statement affirmed.

The internal election will select representatives for constituency seats across all atolls, as well as delegates for youth wings, women's leagues, and administrative governance committees.

Political context and party restructuring

The announcement follows the MDP's national congress held earlier this month, where delegates debated organizational reforms and electoral strategy following parliamentary and local council developments.

Party leaders have emphasized that the revitalized National Council will play a central role in guiding legislative priorities in the People's Majlis and preparing grassroots machinery for future national campaigns. The party has instructed local branches across the country to assist eligible members in verifying their registration status prior to the closure of the voter list.
