A new coordinating body has been established to manage all public tertiary hospitals in the Maldives.

The move is intended to improve oversight, resource allocation and service delivery across the major facilities that provide advanced care. Details of the group’s exact mandate, membership and reporting lines have not yet been fully published, but officials have indicated that it will bring greater consistency to hospital administration.

Tertiary hospitals in the Maldives include Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Malé and several regional facilities. Coordination challenges have previously been cited in areas such as specialist staffing, equipment procurement and patient referral pathways.

The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure, including new atoll hospitals financed through bilateral loans. It also follows recent discussions about the performance and governance of public health institutions.

Further information on the body’s powers and initial priorities is expected in the coming weeks.
