The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said heavy rain overnight caused flooding at more than 80 locations across Malé City.
According to NDMA figures, reports of water entering buildings were received from 89 sites in total. These included 33 private homes, 35 shops, six cafes and restaurants, as well as government and private buildings such as four schools, two clinics, two mosques, one office and one construction site.
Malé City Council worked with NDMA to clear water and prevent further entry into homes. The council was supplied with 10,000 sandbags, and assistance was provided to 31 locations during the night.
The Maldives Meteorological Service recorded about 90 millimetres of rain in Malé over the preceding 24 hours. Forecasters expect continued unsettled weather with heavy showers over much of the country for the next three days and have urged the public to take precautions.
MNDF Fire and Rescue teams have been deploying pumps in affected areas. Residents have been advised to place sandbags at entrances, move valuables to higher ground and secure loose items.
Similar heavy rain events have repeatedly affected drainage in the capital.
