The Dhiveheenge Bin Dhivehinge (Maldivian Land for Maldivians) movement has demanded a national referendum on the Rasmale' development and announced a mass protest in the capital on 6 November.

Former Home Minister Imran Abdulla, speaking at a press conference, said the project represents a major change to the sovereign territory of the Maldives and cannot be finalised without public consent. The movement has raised concerns over the involvement of foreign parties and long-term implications for national identity.

Commercial terms for the allocation of 500 hectares of reclaimed land to Eagle Hills were signed in September. The government has indicated plans to proceed with a definitive agreement around Republic Day.

The protest call comes amid ongoing political debate, with opposition parties also pressing for a public vote. The movement has framed the issue as one requiring direct consultation with the Maldivian people.

Further details on the planned demonstration are expected in the coming days.
