The National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM) has called for a formal and impartial investigation into a physical altercation involving diving teams from the liveaboards Maldives Legend and Infinity X.
The association issued a statement after a video circulated widely on social media showing two divers engaged in a struggle underwater, followed by a heated exchange on a vessel after they surfaced. NBAM expressed concern over the footage and appealed to the public to avoid targeted accusations until the facts are established.
NBAM urged the Maldives Police Service and the Ministry of Tourism to conduct a comprehensive inquiry. It also asked authorities to examine the extent of genuine local involvement in vessels such as Infinity X, which was previously foreign-operated but is now registered under a Maldivian company.
The association noted discrepancies in Infinity X’s operational data: it is registered with the Ministry of Tourism as having 20 rooms and 40 beds, while international booking platforms list 19 rooms with capacity for 30 passengers.
Maldives Legend has said it has referred the matter to relevant authorities and prioritises diver safety.
