Former President Mohamed Nasheed has declared his full support for the Rasmale’ project during a meeting of the MDP National Council.

Nasheed said he backs the plan to develop the reclaimed land with foreign investment, arguing that it can bring economic benefits if properly structured. At the same time, he expressed concern that the MDP is moving away from its founding principles of transparency, consultation and protection of national interests.

His statement comes as the MDP has submitted a resolution to the Majlis calling for a public referendum on the deal. The party has also resolved to stage protests if a referendum is not held.

Nasheed’s position differs from that of other senior MDP figures who have demanded a halt to the project pending public consultation. He has previously criticised aspects of the current government’s economic management while supporting certain investment initiatives.

The Rasmale’ deal has divided opinion within the opposition as well as between the government and its critics. Nasheed’s endorsement is likely to influence internal party discussions ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

The former president has also launched a short story collection and has been active in public commentary on economic and political issues.
