President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that strengthening food security is essential to the Maldives' national resilience and economic sustainability.

In a statement marking World Food Day 2026, the President highlighted the need to build innovative, sustainable and resilient food systems that ensure access to safe, nutritious and affordable food. As a small island nation, the Maldives faces particular challenges in maintaining reliable food supplies.

He called for greater investment in local food production, the adoption of new technologies, and continued support for farmers and fishers. The government has taken steps to strengthen the fisheries sector, including ensuring payments to fishers within 48 hours and expanding storage and processing infrastructure.

Protecting natural resources that sustain livelihoods was also emphasised. Officials have noted that climate impacts and external supply disruptions underscore the importance of domestic capacity.

The statement aligns with broader government priorities on economic diversification and climate adaptation. Further details on specific new programmes were not outlined in the World Food Day message.
