President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that he will not take any action that undermines the fundamental pillars of the nation, including its long-standing status as a 100 percent Muslim country, the independence of its citizens and Maldivian identity.
He gave the assurance during a speech at Republic Square on Victory Day. "The complete assurance I give to you while standing in this historic square is that I will not do anything that would undermine the nation's pillars," he said.
Muizzu said every decision he takes is aimed at strengthening the nation's stability, safety and security while delivering a more developed life for citizens. He also spoke of the need to embrace economic changes without compromising red lines around nationalism, independence and sovereignty.
The remarks come amid ongoing debate over the Rasmale' development project and other large-scale initiatives. The government has repeatedly stated that foreign ownership of Maldivian land remains prohibited under the Constitution.
