President Mohamed Muizzu has said his administration will not take any decision that undermines the Islamic identity, independence or sovereignty of the Maldives.

Speaking at the Victory Day ceremony at Republic Square, he described the pledge as unequivocal. He said national development must proceed without compromising the country's fundamental values.

Islam is the state religion under the Constitution. Muizzu said policies would strengthen and protect every aspect of Maldivian nationhood, including territorial integrity and long-term security.

He linked sovereignty to economic self-sufficiency, stronger defence capabilities and reduced dependence on foreign assistance.

The remarks came amid public debate over the Rasmale' development and residency provisions for foreign buyers.
