President Mohamed Muizzu has begun a state visit to Pakistan, the first by a Maldivian head of state since 2015. High-level talks are scheduled with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Pakistani media have reported that the two sides will sign 12 documents, including memoranda of understanding and formal agreements. Areas expected to be covered include defence and military cooperation, trade, investment, healthcare, education, climate change, tourism and civil aviation. Discussions are also expected to address the possible establishment of direct flights.

The visit follows a recent trip to Pakistan by a delegation of ruling People’s National Congress parliamentarians led by Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla. During that trip, the Speaker met Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff.

Officials have described the trip as an opportunity to expand bilateral ties across multiple fields.
