The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert for torrential rain and thunderstorms.

The alert covers periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across various parts of the country. The Met Office said the southwest monsoon is strengthening, bringing unsettled weather that is forecast to continue from Saturday through Wednesday.

Surface winds are expected to remain moderate at 5 to 15 miles per hour under normal conditions, but gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour during squalls. Seas may become rough, and seafarers, fishing vessels and inter-island transport operators have been advised to exercise caution.

Reduced visibility, strong gusts and heavy downpours are possible in some areas while others may see intermittent showers. The agency said prevailing winds are not expected to be particularly strong outside of thunderstorm activity.

The National Disaster Management Authority has shared the alert. Authorities typically urge the public and boat operators to monitor official forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and strong gusts.

The warning comes as the monsoon pattern continues to influence conditions across the archipelago.
