The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted a resolution to the People’s Majlis seeking a public referendum on the Rasmale’ land deal.

The resolution calls for a national vote to decide whether land should be granted to UAE-based Eagle Hills for a development that would allow foreign residency. The party argues that the long-term implications for national interests require direct public consultation.

MDP lawmakers have said they will stage protests if a referendum is not held. The resolution follows months of criticism from opposition parties, local councils and civil society groups over the lack of transparency surrounding the agreement.

The government has not indicated that it will support a referendum. Officials have described the project as an economic opportunity that will generate revenue and employment. Details of the commercial terms have not been fully released.

The submission of the resolution marks a formal parliamentary step in the opposition’s campaign against the deal. It is unclear whether the ruling majority will allow the resolution to proceed to a vote.

Public opinion remains divided, with some welcoming potential investment and others expressing concern about land ownership, residency rules and the process by which the agreement was negotiated.
